About Us

Kurly Planet was started as a platform to celebrate black hair. It stemmed from the belief that curly hair is scientifically believed to be the ancestral condition of the human race and so every kink, coil and curl should be celebrated.

It was founded by Metiya, who after going in natural in 2009 found that there were very few resources available to learn about her natural hair, how to take care of it and where to find the right products for it.

“When I decided to embrace my natural hair, I had no idea how to take care of it. I grew up in a small village town in North England and hairdressers would wince in awkwardness when I attempted to walk through their doors. From a young age, I saw that as a Black woman, I was not catered for in my society and would have to learn how to cater to my own hair needs.” – Metiya

After devoting her time to study Black hair and skin science at university, Metiya started a blog sharing the science and maintenance of black natural hair in 2009. Through this, she was able to unite with other women across the globe going through the same process, sharing tips and education to support each other virtually.

“I witnessed the emergence of brands from Black people looking to change generational habits and how the community came together in support of these brands. Buying products created to nourish and care for curly hair, whilst encouraging others in the community to commercialise their home-made oils, butters and creams to help curly hair everywhere. The power therein forced the big brands who had ignored natural hair for years to curate products for this ‘Natural Hair movement’.

It was very exciting to go from not having any products available for my hair type, to having a range of healthy and natural products to choose from. And it was empowering to see how this change was driven by the Black community, my virtual sisters and brothers across the world all looking to change the narrative of ‘good hair’ to include Black natural hair.”

Our mission is simple:

1. To support those small brands who dedicate their business to making healthy products for black natural hair.

2. To celebrate all black hair by ensuring that every kink, coil and curl is catered to and represented in the natural hair community.

3. To empower the next generation to embrace their black natural hair through support, education and access to the right products.

We welcome you to join with us in our mission and become part of the Kurly Planet tribe. Because every kink, coil and curl matters.
